David
Ellenbogen
is a musician, producer, educator and a radio host. As a guitarist
and vocalist he has performed in The Kingdom of Tonga, Ghana, Australia,
Thailand, India, and at home in New York. With an open mind and
approach, he performs music from Hendrix to Bach and incorporates
world music styles that span continents and centuries. After a few
years working with legendary producer George Wein, the creator of
the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals, David left to record, study
and play music in places like Samoa, Bali, and India. In Calcutta,
David studied raga intensely with Debashish Bhattacharya, who has
been called, “the world’s greatest slide guitarist.”
With the focus and dedication he learned from Bhattacharya he later
continued studies in Classical, Afro-Brazillian and African guitar.
As a radio host, David has been on the air at several stations,
including a stint as a DJ in Ghana, West Africa - with a listening
audience of millions. At WKCR 89.9 FM-NY David created a show, “Ragas
Live,” where the greatest names in Indian Classical Music
have come to perform live in the studio. Since then, scores of Grammy
winners have come to speak or perform and his guests have ranged
from Walter Becker, founder of Steely Dan, to McCoy Tyner, pianist
in John Coltrane’s classic quartet.
Currently David has been exploring the polyrhythmic grooves of the
Griot caste of musicians from Mali, performing with Famorro Dioubate’s
Kakande. He also records and performs with the Acoustic Mandala
Project, which he co-founded with bansuri wizard Joshua Geisler
- this raga-based ambient music is ideal for yoga and meditation. |
