ACT OUT!

Improvisation directions

One way of opening up the imagination to create an improvisation or story, is by using the elements of 1) Where, 2) When, 3) What, 4) Who, and 5) Feel. These elements create the essentials for scene or dialogue.

Directions: Print out page. Cut down columns evenly and paste on card stock. Then cut individual items from each column into squares. Place topics from the same category (color) into a container or paper cup. Each spontaneous story needs only one topic from each category. A parent, teacher or friend decides who should pick the topic.

For example, I picked at random: 1) Jungle,  2) Future,  3) Acrobat
4) Impatient and  5) "Hide Here."

Here is my scene. It takes place in the Jungle in Future time, which means I could have all kinds of outrageous and technically advanced equipment. I am an Acrobat, which means I can swing upside down from vines or can walk across steep ravines on a tight rope. I am Impatient. Lastly, the opening line of the dialog is: "Hide here!" leading us to believe that there must be something to hide from. And so begins the scene.

Scenes can have two or more players. No more than 4 players per scene is recommended to avoid chaos. Facilitators or students can create words of their own in each of the categories. Provides an excellent format for teaching, i.e,. Middle Ages: What was it like living in those times?
